The Current Standard: PRINCE2 7th Edition
The current version of PRINCE2 is the 7th Edition, released by PeopleCert in September 2023 — the first major update since 2017. In January 2026, PeopleCert updated certificate naming: Foundation certificates now carry the label *PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation (Version 7)*, reflecting the method's current positioning.
All 2026 exams align fully with the 7th Edition.
What Changed in Version 7
The 7th Edition is not a new method. It is a modernisation of a method that already works — updated for how projects actually get delivered now.
People. The human element is treated as a core project management discipline, not an afterthought. Managing stakeholders, building teams, and understanding behavioural dynamics are integrated throughout, not bolted on.
Sustainability. An explicit performance aspect for the first time. Projects are expected to consider environmental and social impact as part of the Business Case, not separately.
Digital and data. Data management and digital delivery are elevated into the method itself. The 7th Edition acknowledges that most projects now operate in hybrid or fully digital environments.
Tailoring. Flexibility is strengthened. PRINCE2 7 is designed to fit real-world constraints — agile delivery, small teams, public sector governance — without requiring a rigid process overhead.
Practices, not Themes. The 6th Edition had seven Themes. The 7th Edition has seven Practices — the same disciplines reframed around what practitioners actually do.
The Seven Principles
These are unchanged from previous editions. They are the foundation everything else is built on:
1. Continued business justification — if there is no valid reason to run the project, stop it
2. Learn from experience — lessons are actively sought, recorded and applied
3. Defined roles and responsibilities — everyone knows what they are accountable for
4. Manage by stages — plan and authorise one stage at a time
5. Manage by exception — set tolerances, only escalate when they are breached
6. Focus on products — define what needs to be produced before deciding how to produce it
7. Tailor to suit the project — apply PRINCE2 at the level appropriate to the project's complexity
The Two Certifications
Foundation — tests understanding of the terminology, principles, practices and processes. Closed book. Multiple choice. The baseline for anyone working in or around PRINCE2 projects.
Practitioner — tests ability to apply PRINCE2 in realistic project scenarios. Open book (the official manual only). Objective test format. Scenario-based questions. Requires Foundation first.
Both are issued by PeopleCert, the sole examining body. All exams are online.
Why It Matters in 2026
PRINCE2 is the dominant project management certification outside North America. Governments, defence, financial services, EU multinationals and Commonwealth enterprises list it by name in job descriptions for Project Managers, Programme Managers and PMO roles.
The 7th Edition's alignment with sustainability, digital transformation and people-centred delivery makes it more relevant to current project environments than any previous version.
